Election Day Tasks
- Greeter – Acknowledge voters and provide any needed assistance as they enter the polling location. Answer voter questions or direct to chief inspector. Ensure voters are at the correct polling location. Help with flow of the polling location.
- Badger Books – Check in and register voters on electronic poll book, training will be provided. The Badger Book system is very user friendly and prompts user through both the check in and registration processes.
- Ballot Table – Set of two election inspectors issue ballots to voters and direct to voting booths or accessible voting machine to mark their ballot. Maintain tracking of number of ballots issued for each reporting unit at the polling location.
- Absentee Ballots – Set of two election inspectors check in absentee ballots, open absentee ballots, feed ballots through the tabulator, and re-make any ballot that the machine is not able to read.
- Ballot Machine – Ensure voters insert ballot and each ballot is counted (read any messages that appear on the machine and address ballot jams), hand out I voted stickers.
- Chief Inspector – Acts as liaison between the election inspectors and the municipal clerk and is in charge of the polling place on Election Day. There are additional training requirements every two years for chief inspectors.
Qualifications
- Eligible to vote in Whitefish Bay or Milwaukee County
- Adult U.S. citizen
- Resident of Whitefish Bay or Milwaukee County for at least 28 days
- Not disqualified from voting
- Never convicted of a felony
- Attend training before every election you work
- Create a welcoming polling place environment
- Pay close attention to detail
- Be capable of performing each task at the polling place
- Perform duties in a non-partisan manner
- Abide by state and federal election laws
- Never engage in electioneering at the polling place
- Treat all voters, fellow election inspectors and Village staff with respect
- Not be a candidate for any office on the ballot for that election
- Regularly check e-mail for communications from the Clerk's Office
- Refrain from spreading misinformation, disinformation, or malinformation about the election process
High School Students (age 16 or 17)
Students age 16 or 17 may work at the polls on Election Day. Students must meet all qualifications other than being a qualified elector. These students are required to obtain written authorization from the student's parent or guardian. Written authorization from the principal or program administrator from their school if the student has less than a 3.0 grade point average. Students (age 16 or 17) may only work at the polling place that serves their residence.
High School Students (age 18)
Students age 18 may work at the polls on Election Day. These students would apply as a regular election inspector and do not need any additional authorization or have any restrictions on where they can work.
Inspectors have the choice to receive compensation or volunteer. Both are treated the same for scheduling and Election Day tasks.
